The acropolis of ancient Smyrna
Kadifekale was built in the 3rd century BC by Lysimachus, one of Alexander the Great's generals, serving as the acropolis of the ancient city of Smyrna. Sitting atop Mount Pagos at 186 meters, the fortress occupies a point that dominates the city both geographically and symbolically.
A five-towered wall line
The fortress has 5 towers. The structure carries traces of different eras across the centuries and underwent an extensive restoration between 2015 and 2016.

One of Kadifekale's most sought-after qualities is its panoramic view of the city and the İzmir Gulf. For visitors who arrive around sunset, this view is a major draw alongside the fortress's historical value.
How to get there
The fortress sits on a hill near central Konak district; as the slope is steep, a taxi or public transport is often preferred. The route down from the fortress can be combined with a walk through the historic fabric of Kemeraltı Bazaar.
