The legacy of a British merchant
Paterson Mansion was built in 1859-60 by British merchant John Paterson. With its 38 rooms, the mansion holds the title of İzmir's largest Levantine mansion.
Nationalization and fire
The mansion was nationalized in 1978 and suffered a fire in 1986. These events left the structure facing an uncertain future for an extended period.
The 2017 restoration
The mansion was transferred to the İzmir Metropolitan Municipality and restored in 2017. This restoration ensured that the structure's architectural value was preserved for today.
Bornova's Levantine heritage
Together with other Levantine structures in Bornova — such as Mattheys Mansion and the churches of St. Mary Magdalene and Santa Maria — Paterson Mansion forms part of a whole that reflects the district's 19th-century cosmopolitan past.
