One of Anatolia's oldest theatres
The Ancient Theatre of Phokaia was built in the 340s BC and is considered one of the oldest known theatres in Anatolia. An important cultural structure of the ancient city of Phokaia, the theatre played a central role in the city's social life.
Ongoing excavations
Archaeological excavations have continued at the theatre since 1991. This work has provided a better understanding of the structure's architectural details and historical context.
Not to be confused with the modern theatre
An important point for visitors is that the modern "Open Air Theatre" in the courtyard of Foça Castle is a different structure from the ancient theatre. The two sites are about 700 meters apart; this confusion is a common mistake among visitors to the area.
