Basilica of St. John

History

The Basilica of St. John was built by Emperor Justinian I in the 6th century (548-565), over the tomb of the Apostle John.

Later History

An important pilgrimage site throughout the Middle Ages, the structure was converted into a mosque after coming under Turkish rule in the 1330s and survives today as ruins.

  • Location: Ayasuluk Hill, Selçuk / İzmir
  • Not to be confused with another church within the Ephesus site — this is a separate structure
