Route and Why This Order

This route fits İzmir's centuries of layered history, from Konak Square to Kadifekale, into a single walk. It begins at the city's landmark İzmir Clock Tower; the adjacent Yalı Mosque is visited right after, covering the square's two historic structures back to back. From there the route enters the narrow streets of Kemeraltı Bazaar; Hisar Mosque and Kızlarağası Han, both within the bazaar, are visited as part of the same walk without a separate detour. Leaving the bazaar, a stop follows at the İzmir Agora Archaeological Site — seeing the commercial heart of Roman-era Smyrna offers a direct historical contrast to the Ottoman-era bazaar just visited. The route closes at Kadifekale, which overlooks the city; saving the day's highest point for last means ending with a climb and, at sunset, a full view of the İzmir Gulf.

Duration, Distance and Transport

The total walking distance between stops is about 4.5 km; the route takes 3-4 hours. A taxi or public transport is recommended for the climb to Kadifekale, as the slope is demanding on foot.

When to Go

Walking through Kemeraltı in the morning is the way to catch the bazaar at its liveliest and least crowded. Timing Kadifekale for near sunset gives the route its most striking closing view.

Local Tip

Straying from Kemeraltı's main avenues into its narrow side alleys reveals corners that show the bazaar's everyday life more closely, away from the tourist crowds.
