Menderes Ancient Cities Route

Route and Why This Order

This route brings together three Ionian cities in Menderes district — Klaros, Notion and Kolophon; since these three cities were historically linked, the route follows that relationship. It begins at the Ancient City of Klaros; active from the 13th century BC to the 4th century AD as an oracle center of Apollo, this is the region's most religiously significant stop, so the day opens here. The route continues to the nearby Ancient City of Notion; as this harbor city historically served Klaros, visiting the two back to back makes their historical relationship tangible. The route ends at the Ancient City of Kolophon, built across three hills; conquered by the Lydian king Gyges in the 7th century BC, this city completes the day as the other member of the Ionian League.

Duration, Distance and Transport

The total distance between stops is about 18 km; the route takes 4-5 hours. The interior of each ancient city is explored on foot; a car is needed for transfers between the cities.

When to Go

All three ancient cities are shadeless open sites; starting early in the morning is the most practical way to avoid the heat in summer.

These three ancient cities receive far fewer visitors than İzmir's more famous sites (like Ephesus) — ideal for those seeking a calm, uncrowded ancient-city experience.
